How to...
Stop Messenger Popups in XP or 2000
If, like me, you use Windows XP and MSN Messenger and hate those annoying popups that appear then here is a quick and easy to follow way to stop them. This also works for Windows 2000.
Thursday 13th April, 2006Right Click My Computer and select Manage
Click Services and Applications on the left column
Double click Services in the right hand column
If you do not have My Computer showing then
Click the Start button and select Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
or in Classic View just double click Administrative Tools
Double click Services
On the right hand column Scroll down until you find "Messenger"
Double click "Messenger"
or Select it and right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
This will show the details of the service.
Click the STOP button.
Now you have a choice to either set Manual which will still allow popups but you will be prompted to display them or disable which will stop all of them.
I prefer Disable as this will stop all those annoying popups. You can always change your mind later if they think of anything useful to use this feature for.
Click OK to finish.
This will only disable Messenger popups within Windows, so Messenger may still show up when you run your Outlook Express, check out support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330117 for more details.![]()
