How to...
Edit the registry
If you have problems with your system and strange things are happening then it may be down to some of the programmes that load when you start Windows.
Messing about with the registry could be dangerous as it contains all the necessary links to all your applications and devices. So be very careful and backup everything as you go.
Start the Registry:
Click Start -> Run
Type REGEDIT and hit Enter or click OK
Now you should have My Computer with a list of 5 HKEY selectors with + in front of each.
Click + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click + in front of SOFTWARE
Click + in front of Microsoft
Click + in front of Windows
Click + in front of CurrentVersion
Now select the Run entry.
On the right you will see a list of all the programs loading at startup.
First backup this section.
Click File and select Export...
Save it as RunReg in My Documents or somewhere else safe.
Now if anything goes wrong next time you start Windows you can import it and be back where you started.
This runreg.reg file can now be emailed to technicians, copied and pasted into emails or forms such as our letters pages so you can find out what is going on.
Use Google.com to search for the programs listed on the right.
If Google produces results indicating the file may be a cirus, spyware or similar then you may wish to remove it.
Hope this helps.![]()
